Toilets Are Not Trashcans: How the Demand for Grinder Pumps with Axial Cutters Addresses an Industry Wide Challenge
- On January 31, 2020
Clogging is a challenge faced by municipalities and maintenance supervisors on a regular basis resulting in decreased flow capacity, increased spending for pit and pipe cleaning, contamination of water sources and excessive repair or replacement costs. Clogged systems may also create risks to public health and the safety of personnel from exposure to HAZMAT through sewage overflows or through contact with jagged-edged materials when attempting to manually clear a clog. This issue has driven demand for grinder pumps which have the capacity to break down solids in the collection system before they reach the treatment plant.
During the last 10 years, a major change to the wastewater media stream has included wipes tagged by manufacturers as “flushable.” Wipes – especially baby wipes and cleaning wipes made from non-woven fabrics – don’t break down the same way toilet paper does. Fats, oils and grease (FOG) that get into the sewer system combine with the wipes to aggravate clogging issues which have steadily worsened over the last 25 years.
